How To

How to Install an Receptacle Box

You should follow all guidelines provided by your local building inspector when installing any type or outlet. This includes ensuring the correct installation and that there is no water damage or fire hazard.

As far as installation goes, most boxes come prewired with four wires coming from the breaker panel. The box's two black wires are connected to the first screw. The red and white wires connect to the second screw. When connecting wires, it is important that you don't use wire nuts or wrap around screws. If you do this, it will be difficult for the wires not to stick in their place once they are tightened. These wires should be free to move, but not tight enough to cause them to pull out of the holes.

If you want to add receptacle to an already existing box, you might need to consider adding another piece of hardware. You'll need to take off the top of your existing metal box, and then add a cover plate. Once you have made the hole in the cover plate for the new connector, connect all of your wires to it.

You may not need a licensed electrician to replace the existing light switches in your home. The first thing you will need to do is remove the old switch from its mounting location. Then, disconnect all wires connecting to the switch. These wires can be used to power the switch or supply electricity to the light fixtures in the room. Now you are ready to start the replacement process.

Once you have removed the old switch, measure the distance between wall studs and mark it with a permanent marker. Once you've done this, you need to decide if the switch should be placed high above or low to the floor. Depending on the height at which the switch will be mounted, you will either need to drill a hole for the mounting bracket or attach the switch directly to the wall using drywall anchors.

Once measurements have been taken, and the locations are marked up you can start the job. Begin tearing down the drywall in the area where you want to install the switch. For cable safety, make sure you leave 8 inches between each of the studs. Next, install the switch by attaching the brackets to it. You will also need to attach the cables to the switch before tightening it down onto the mounting plates. Once the switch is fully installed, you'll need to turn back the power and test it for proper operation.
