Personal preference is the most important factor. Some prefer to pay per hour so they can see the actual cost of their handyman. Others prefer to be paid for each job completed, since they may need multiple jobs at the same time. Either way, it's fine.

How many hours does it normally take to complete a typical DIY project?

A DIY project can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. The difficulty and complexity of the project will affect how long it takes.

When is the right time to hire a handyman?

There is no "right" time to hire handymen. You should get started as soon you can. It is possible to wait until after the holidays to save money. However, you can always pick up your phone and call different handymen.

How To

How to Install a Receptacle Box

Follow the instructions of your local building inspector before installing any type electrical outlet. This includes ensuring that the wiring is installed correctly and that there are no problems associated with water damage or existing fire hazards.

As far as installation goes, most boxes come prewired with four wires coming from the breaker panel. The black and red wires will run through the box to one end, while the white and red wires will go to the other end. When connecting wires, it is important that you don't use wire nuts or wrap around screws. This will make it difficult to get the wires in place once they have been tightened. You want to allow them to move freely, but keep them tight enough that they don't pull away from their holes.

Another piece of hardware may be needed if you are adding a receptacle for an already existing box. You'll need to take off the top of your existing metal box, and then add a cover plate. After you have made the hole for your new receptacle, and attached the coverplate, you will need to connect all wires to your new receptacle.

You may not need a licensed electrician to replace the existing light switches in your home. First, remove the switch from its mount. The next step is to unplug any wires attached to the switch. These wires include those that supply electricity to lights and power going into the switch. After you've disconnected everything, you're ready to begin the replacement process.

After removing the switch, measure the distance to the wall and mark the location with a permanent marking pen. Once you have done this, you will also need to determine if the new switch needs to be mounted high above or below the floor. Depending upon the height of the switch, you'll need to drill a hole to mount the bracket or attach it directly to drywall using drywall anchors.

Once you have the measurements taken and the locations marked, it is time to start the project. With the help of a friend or family member, you can start removing the drywall surrounding the area where the switch will be installed. Make sure to leave about 8 inches of space between each stud so you don't accidentally cut the cable inside the wall. Next, attach the mounting brackets to the new switch. After attaching the cables to the switch, you will need to secure it to the mounting plates. Once the switch has been fully installed, you will need to turn the power back on and test the newly added device to ensure it works properly.
