How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
