How To

How do you replace a broken window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
